Another big jump in applications for some of Britain’s top universities and courses – with an even bigger surge in interest from overseas students over last year – was revealed on Monday by the first figures for university entry for next year.

Ucas, the university clearing service, said there had been a 10.2 per cent rise in applicants for all courses from UK-based students, a 12.4 per cent increase in applications from non-EU students and a 22.8 per cent increase in applications from the rest of the European Union.
