Fashion: Local designs become fabric of the rich

The handful of Russian shoppers rich enough to visit Yuri Yudashkin’s fashion boutique in Moscow in the early 1990s were watched over by a guard with a machine gun.

Mr Yudashkin’s glamorous clothing, like that of a number of designers who sprang on to the new fashion scene, was exotic and desirable in a country emerging from the Soviet era where mass produced clothing was drab and designer labels forbidden fruit.
