Sarkozy courts left in appeal to fraternity

Nicolas Sarkozy, France's president-elect, signalled on Monday that he wanted to move beyond partisan politics by reaching out to trade union leaders and dangling job offers in his government to prominent socialists.

In a speech to members of his rightwing UMP party, Mr Sarkozy said he wanted to overcome old ideological divisions that no longer made sense. For too long, he said, the left had ignored the values of nation, work and order, while the right had neglected solidarity and social justice.
