Dannatt move points to Tory defence fears

General Sir Richard Dannatt, former head of the army, said on Friday that David Cameron had asked him to become an adviser to the Conservatives because the Tory leader told him his party “lacked expert understanding” of defence matters.

Mr Cameron was criticised this week for appointing Sir Richard adviser and possible defence minister in a future Conservative government. Senior figures in the Ministry of Defence attacked the move, saying it will create tensions with his recent successor as chief of the general staff, General Sir David Richards.
