Prodi sees uphill challenge one year on as PM

Disunity among government ministers, the threat of trade union unrest and a disappointing opinion poll cast a shadow yesterday over Romano Prodi, Italy's premier, on the first anniversary of his assumption of office as Italy's prime minister.

Two ministers threatened to desert their centre-left coalition partners and vote against a government bill on "conflicts of interests" that is implacably opposed by Silvio Berlusconi, the billionaire businessman and former premier.
