Why do garden designers and watchers so often dismiss the chrysanthemum? It gives me weeks of pleasure. It involves a simple bit of real gardening and is a superb cut flower. There are excellent hardy varieties that bloom brilliantly without a greenhouse. I am just about to pick the best of my big bronze Max Rileys, knowing that the chrysanthemum was admired in prose, verse and court life long before Riley was even in prospect.
