Energy company haven status in doubt

Energy companies are often seen as havens in troubled times: steady and reliable, providing a product that will always be needed no matter how bad things get.

History, however, suggests their position is not so comfortable. Energy groups are often cruelly exposed to price risk in commodity markets and need to commit large amounts of capital just to keep running.
