Gates seeks to soothe China anger

Robert Gates, the US defence secretary, said yesterday he hoped there would be only a temporary "downturn" in Washington's relations with Beijing after China's furious response to a $6.4bn (€4.5bn, £4bn) US arms package to Taiwan, writes Daniel Dombey in Washington.

"Stability is enhanced by contact between our military and a greater understanding of each other's strategies," he said.
