London mayor gives go-ahead to waterworks

A deal with Thames Water to cut the number of roadworks in London was unveiled by Boris Johnson, as the Tory mayor on Monday sought to maintain momentum in his second week in office.

Plans by Thames Water to build Britain’s first water desalination plant on the banks of the Thames will now go ahead, after Mr Johnson on Monday dropped his predecessor’s legal appeal against the £200m ($391m) development as part of his deal with the company.
