Russian volatility sows seeds of doubt

The joke is wearing thin. Emerging markets investors are known to chuckle that Russia seems to dominate the performance tables every year – either as the best or worst performer.

This year it has done it again. After a phenomenal 2007 performance, Russia’s main share index fell 75 per cent in 2008, worse than the emerging market average of 60 per cent, to put it at the bottom of the world league table.
