Labour whips surprised at scale of resistance

Tony Blair's first defeat in the Commons since becoming prime minister was bigger than government whips had feared and more resounding than his critics on the opposition benches and in his own party had expected.

The rout on the terror bill came when 49 Labour MPs voted with the opposition against government plans to extend pre-charge detention for terror suspects to 90 days and a further 14 abstained.
