Patients and the economy will suffer if researchers are denied access to medical records that allow them to invite patients to take part in clinical trials, leading funders of medical research warned on Wednesday.

At the same time, they said, the bureaucracy that has sharply raised the cost of such trials needs to be reduced if patients are to continue to benefit from cutting edge research.
