The European Commission wants to play a far greater role in the bloc’s immigration and asylum policy and could even take over responsibility for issuing visas for foreign travellers under proposals unveiled on Wednesday .

In a far-reaching document to be debated by member states and the European parliament, Brussels is pushing for deeper integration in judicial matters ranging from data privacy, the fight against terrorism and the cross-border payment of speeding tickets.
