Visitors to the sprawling concrete complex that houses the University of Paris VI would be forgiven for mistaking it for a housing project rather than a place of higher learning.

The lack of pride that students take in their litter-filled surroundings is underscored by the abundance of graffiti on the walls. One reads: “faculté de merde” – a scatological sentiment.
