Vegetable patches and flower beds are back in fashion, boosting sales at gardening retailers and wholesalers, as UK residents try to dig their way out of the recession.

Wyevale Garden Centres, the private chain with 123 outlets, said sales had expanded 50 per cent from last year due to people spending more time at home in the garden to save money or growing their own food to reduce weekly shopping bills.
