Pity the charity or pension fund trustee, trying to make sense of the bewildering array of investment managers who would like to help with their fund. The investment industry has attracted great talent, and has worked out many different ways of managing money.

There are active and passive managers, believers in small companies and supporters of large stocks, users of hedge funds and pioneers of alternative investments, advocates of emerging markets and traditionalists who like to keep most at home.
