WH Smith sales rise defies the gloom

WH Smith, the newsagent chain whose chief executive recently sold almost half her shareholding, yesterday reassured investors with sales figures that stood out from the retail gloom.

A long-term strategic shift away from lower-margin entertainment products, such as DVDs, continued WH Smith's like-for-like sales slide at high street stores, which were down 3 per cent since the first half.
