Alongside his role at Goldman Sachs, Hank Paulson has held another, lesser-known chairmanship: that of The Nature Conservancy, a prominent US environmental campaigning group.

Mr Paulson’s convictions have seen him preside over the “greening” of Goldman, but they threaten to bring him into conflict with some of his new colleagues in an administration frequently attacked by the green lobby.
