Australia forecasts surge in asylum seekers

The Australian government is predicting a surge in asylum seekers, with thousands of boat people trying to enter the country after a huge rise in illegal migrants to nearby Indonesia.

Kevin Rudd, Australia’s prime minister, said he had spoken this week to the leaders of Indonesia and Malaysiaabout how to deal with the “great challenge” of people-smuggling.
