John McCain, trailing in opinion polls in the race for the White House, met Barack Obama for their third and final presidential debate on Wednesday, putting up what some commentators called a feisty performance as he sought to turn his campaign around.

Touching for the first time in a presidential debate on some of the negative campaigning of which the Republican camp has been accused, Mr McCain challenged Mr Obama about his relationship with William Ayers, former Weather Underground leader.
