Candidate for LDP leadership urges reform

A candidate for leadership of Japan’s once-mighty Liberal Democratic party has warned it could cease to exist unless it fundamentally redefines itself following crushing defeat in last month’s general election.

The warning from Taro Kono, an LDP Diet member and son of a former foreign minister, comes as lawmakers and local representatives prepare for a party presidential election on Monday that has potentially far-reaching implications for the political landscape of the world’s second largest economy.
