Six months ago, this column pointed out that when any one FTSE sector grows fat, the story usually ends messily. The case in point was mining companies - particularly those that had come to London to list, leaving a controlling stake in the hands of a single foreign shareholder.

India-centric Vedanta Resources, Fresnillo, the Mexican silver and gold miner, and Kazakhmys were the FTSE 100 entities cited.
