Brown clears path to Belfast policing

Gordon Brown has assured parties in Northern Ireland that the government will fund the cost of policing terrorist emergencies.

The offer was part of an £800m ($1.3bn) package offered to secure agreement on a timetable for the devolution of policing, which ministers see as the final stage in the 1998 Good Friday settlement restoring power-sharing to the province.
