Foreign countries are meddling in Afghanistan’s presidential elections and increasing the risk that the country becomes still more unstable after next week’s vote, a former US envoy to Kabul has warned.
Writing in the Financial Times, Zalmay Khalilzad says the election could trigger intensified ethnic clashes and Taliban attacks intended to disrupt the contest. There was also the possibility that some candidates could refuse to accept official results, he said.
