Thai premier's corruption pledge meets with scepticism

Thaksin Shinawatra, Thailand's prime minister, vowed yesterday to eradicate the corruption pervading nearly every level of Thai government and society, but critics said his promises rang hollow.

In a televised address, Mr Thaksin - who made a fortune by securing monopoly concessions from famously corrupt state agencies - promised to reward those who named crooked officials, and warned bribetakers' assets could be confiscated.
