First Choice bolstered by niche holidays

First Choice said on Thursday that bookings for its specialist and niche holidays were up strongly, although sales of its mainstream short-haul package holidays were weak.

The company, which is in the midst of a merger with the holiday business of TUI of Germany, to form TUI Travel, reported an increased first half pre-tax loss, largely due to higher interest payments on acquisitions. Holiday companies usually record a loss for the winter period.
