Brown and Sarkozy seek fiscal boost

Gordon Brown, UK prime minister, and Nicolas Sarkozy, French president, on Monday called for a concerted European fiscal boost to offset a recession, while desperately seeking to heal a growing rift with Germany over the issue.

Mr Brown and Mr Sarkozy pointed to a massive public works plan by Barack Obama, US president-elect, as further evidence that they are right to argue for a large stimulus package in Europe.
