Doubts about Russia cloud overall outlook

Three developments dominate the economic outlook for the countries of the former communist bloc - the European Union’s eastward expansion, the rise in oil prices and the break-up of the Yukos oil group in Russia.

EU accession last year tied eight east European countries into the world’s biggest economic and political community. The prospect of future membership is also steadily bringing south-east Europe into the EU’s orbit.
