Delays plague early warning system

The early warning system that monitors the Indian Ocean for tsunamis is still not working properly because of delays by governments in sharing data, the United Nations said yesterday.

The system consists of a network of buoys, seismic instruments, sea-level gauges and deep ocean pressure sensors. Information from these instruments is relayed to the tsunami warning centre in the Pacific and the Japanese meteorological agency, which then issue information bulletins to authorities in the region.
