Brown snubs army over Afghan troop levels

Gordon Brown on Wednesday rejected long-standing calls by army chiefs to permanently raise the number of UK troops deployed in Afghanistan, insisting Britain now shoulders its fair share of the burden in Nato’s mission.

Publishing a fresh medium-term strategy for Afghanistan and Pakistan that brings the UK formally into line with the US administration’s policy, the prime minister announced Britain would temporarily send 700 troops to Helmand this autumn to help provide security for the presidential election.
