US senators make overtures to Syria

Acting against the wishes of the Bush administration and Israel, three Democratic senators and at least one Republican are visiting Damascus to explore the possibility of engagement between Syria and the US, as recommended by the bipartisan Iraq Study Group.

"I think there's a crack in the door for discussions to continue," Senator Bill Nelson, a Florida Democrat, said after meeting Bashar al-Assad, the Syrian president, yesterday.
