England’s bid to host the 2018 World Cup will not be deflected by outspoken criticism from within football’s world governing body, Lord Triesman, the Football Association chairman, said on Thursday.
The bid, critical to Gordon Brown’s vision of “a golden decade of British sport”, endured what Lord Triesman acknowledged was a “difficult day” on Wednesday when Jack Warner, a Fifa vice-president, lambasted England’s “lightweight” bid leaders at a football industry conference in London.
