Blair gives full backing to 90-day detention without charge proposal

Tony Blair has thrown his full weight behind government plans for terror suspects to be held for up to three months, declaring police have made a "compelling" case for the extension of detention without charge.

As the Home Office prepares to publish a draft counter-terrorism bill today that will include the controversial measure, the prime minister insisted he was not backing the 90-day proposal simply because the police were demanding it.
