NHS faces rising bill for negligence claims

The National Health Service is facing a spiralling bill for medical negligence claims, with the government planning to spend almost £8bn over the next 10 years to settle cases, according to new figures.

The NHS made a 10-year provision of £7.8bn for liabilities in 2003-04, underlining the case for legislation to streamline the settlement of negligence claims, as ministers are proposing.
