Slump threatens S Africa racial boost

Sharply falling share prices and an abrupt economic slowdown are undermining the viability of what has been one of the central pillars of South African policy since the end of apartheid - black economic empowerment aimed at redressing past financial injustices.

Senior figures in the ruling African National Congress would like a radical overhaul of the policy, which requires traditionally white-owned and managed companies to sell equity stakes and management posts to black business groups.
