Citigroup buys out Thomson pensions

Citigroup has reached agreement to buy the £200m closed pension fund of Thomson Regional Newspapers, becoming the first bank to take control of an external pension fund.

The unusual move means Citi will take the longevity and investment risks of the scheme on to its own balance sheet although the fund is technically in surplus as measured by theFRS 17 accounting standard.
