US retail sales show surprise rise

US retail sales in January rose for the first time in six months, as consumers were lured by deep post-holiday discounts in spite of growing job cuts and declining home values.

January retail sales were up 1 per cent from the month before, according to figures released on Thursday by the commerce department, breaking a record stretch of six months of declines. Sales were off by 9.7 per cent compared with the previous January, however.
