Rating agencies act as crisis hits

As the global financial crisis has plunged to ever greater depths, credit rating agencies have found themselves increasingly in the spotlight.

They have been chastised for assigning top ratings to bonds backed by subprime mortgages and other assets. They have also had to keep pace with the unravelling financial crisis and gauge where it will hit next.
