Philippine lawmakers abolish death penalty

Philippine lawmakers have abolished the death penalty but elation among human rights advocates has been muted by the rise in extra-judicial killings of anti-government activists, journalists and suspected criminals.

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo on Wednesday said the move was a “clear proof that Filipinos respect and value the sanctity of human life”.
