Call for tax freeze as wine costs rise

The price of a bottle of wine could rise by 50p this year due to rising costs of glass, grapes and shipping, the Wine and Spirit Trade Association warned yesterday as it called for a tax freeze in this year's Budget.

The association, which is worried that the government will respond to groups campaigning against binge drinking by raising alcohol taxes, said significant increases in the cost of oil and other raw materials had put the drinks industry "under pressure".
