Toyota quits Formula One racing

Toyota is to follow Honda and BMW out of Formula One to save money amid the economic downturn, which has battered the Japanese carmaker’s sales.

Akio Toyoda, chief executive, apologised to fans on Wednesday and said Toyota had “tried everything” to streamline an F1 programme that is believed to have cost the company at least $300m a year, making it one of the sport’s biggest spenders.
