Bright hope at embryonic stage

Yesterday's approval for Britain's first human cloning research caused celebrations not only at Newcastle's Centre for Life, where the experiments will take place, but among scientists around the country.

They see the decision by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority as a sign that Britain will take a lead in developing embryonic stem cells to treat degenerative diseases from diabetes to Parkinson's.
