The Indonesian rupiah yesterday fell to its lowest level against the US dollar since March 2002, breaking through the Rp10,000 mark and prompting the central bank to give assurances it is monitoring the currency closely.
The fall, to Rp10,030 to the dollar at the close last night, drew calls from Indonesian business for the government to speak out in support of the rupiah, which has fallen more than 5 per cent against the US dollar this year. Traders said Bank Indonesia had been seen selling dollars to support the local currency.
