Banking: Questions raised by size of carte blanche bail-outs

Qatar is the largest depositor, lender and shareholder in the domestic banking system, so when the financial crisis worsened in the wake of Lehman Brothers’ bankruptcy last year, the government was not shy about propping up its banks.

Qatari banks looked somewhat stretched after years of hyperactive lending and rapidly swelling balance sheets – banking assets grew at an annual rate of 40 per cent between 2003 and 2008.
