Swedish model provides hope

When Nordea Bank announced a forecast-beating increase in third-quarter net profits on Wednesday, it marked another vindication for the Swedish model of bank restructuring that the UK is now, in part, emulating.

Nordea, previously known as Nordbanken, was one of two lenders nationalised by the Swedish government and split into “good” and “bad” banks after the country was hit by a financial crisis in the early 1990s.
