Ministers criticised over rise in serious violence

Critics attacked the Home Office’s record on law and order on Thursday after ministers admitted that some police forces had been under-reporting serious crime.

The number of serious violent offences jumped by 22 per cent to 5,500 cases in the second quarter of 2008, year-on-year figures show. This was largely due to a 26 per cent rise – to 5,100 – in grievous bodily harm with intent.
