Among the many mysteries surrounding Suharto, the former Indonesian dictator who died on Sunday, is just how much wealth he and his family amassed during his 32 years in power.
In 2004 Transparency International, an anti-corruption watchdog, declared Suharto to be the world’s greatest ever kleptocrat with a fortune of up to $35bn. The United Nations and World Bank quoted this research, although without confirming it, when they launched an international campaign last year to help governments recoup state assets stolen by previous regimes.
