A top al-Qaeda operative has been killed in the border region of Pakistan and Afghanistan, a western official said yesterday, Demetri Sevastopulo reports.

The official said there was "no reason to doubt" reports that Abu Laith al-Libi, a senior al-Qaeda leader, whom the US believes was responsible for military operations inside Afghanistan, had been killed. The official declined to comment on how Libi died.
