Swisscom on Tuesday night announced it was in talks about a possible merger with Telekom Austria, reinforcing lengthy speculation about a link between the two small European telecoms groups.

Swisscom and TA declined to comment on the announcement, made after a request by the Austrian takeover commission. Officials at the Austrian finance ministry also said they had nothing to add.
