This is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is perhaps the end of the beginning. Who will come out best from the battle for Britain’s banks?

Eric Daniels. The Lloyds Banking Group chief executive was badly wounded in the original skirmishes. Took heavy fire in the aftermath of the Lloyds-HBOS merger (the Battle of the Bulge), which killed Sir Victor Blank outright. Daniels somehow remained standing. Emerges from the latest fight with Brussels bruised and with some gory flesh wounds but, amazingly to those who expected him to expire, in better shape than many fellow officers.
